Visual Arts

Engaging in activities such as painting, sculpting or making jewelry can have positive and lasting effects on children. At Baldwin, art is a subject that provides extensive opportunities for creative problem-solving, self-discovery and self-reflection for all students. Furthermore, art helps students exercise and strengthen various areas of their brains while creating space for natural exploration and student-led decision-making.

Baldwin's art programs are led by expert faculty, many of whom are practicing artists. With support and encouragement, students learn to view their work as a process, not just a product. Baldwin girls gain confidence in making decisions about their projects, emphasizing the importance of learning and its significance on the path to success.

  • Lower School

The Baldwin Lower School Art curriculum adopts a studio and academic approach, integrating creativity and problem-solving skills essential for young children's growth and exploration. Students are introduced to art's conceptual, graphic and visual language, helping them understand art as a meaningful tool that reinforces skills across various academic subjects while allowing them to express their creativity.

When children are offered the opportunity to manipulate paintbrushes or cut-and-paste materials, they develop and enhance their fine motor skills. Experimenting with different materials also introduces them to scientific concepts. When children take pride in their creations, art plays a significant role in boosting their self-confidence. A key objective of the curriculum is to provide engaging opportunities, creative themes and technical development that ignite a personal passion for art in every student.
  • Middle School

In Middle School Art, students will build on their exploration and discoveries from Lower School while anticipating exciting and diverse opportunities in Upper School. They will investigate a variety of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography and digital imagery, to gain a solid understanding of the elements and principles of design. Students will collaborate to tackle complex visual challenges, foster authentic communication, and both give and receive constructive criticism. This collaborative environment will help them develop analytical skills that benefit them in the art room and beyond.
  • Upper School

In Upper School, students can explore eight studio classes: painting, sculpture, jewelry, fibers and glass, art history, ceramics, digital photography and graphic arts. Through perceptual painting, imaginative sculpture and thoughtful responses to image-making concepts in photography — combined with timeless craftsmanship and modern technologies in jewelry — Baldwin students can fully explore what it means to lean into their unique voice and style as artists. This blend of ancient art forms with contemporary experiences in the ceramics studio encourages students to explore profound questions about what we know, feel and communicate. Additionally, the art history course offers a genuine interdisciplinary exploration for students wishing to dive deeper into the field.
